Dexter Avenue

Being in the will of God is the best place to be. And God always has an interesting way of setting you up for where he wants you to be.

Back in 2020, the Lord pressed upon our hearts to do “heart work” and to educate ourselves in the area of racial reconciliation and we invited others along on the journey with us. For a number of months, we read through writings centered on the matter of racial reconciliation with awesome groups of people from different races and backgrounds. And we became intentional about teaching our children history from a Biblical worldview.

Fast forward a few years, our family receives orders to Montgomery, Alabama. A cusp of American history.

But more specifically he even led us to Dexter Ave…THE historic Dexter Ave.

A roadway that was influential to the civil rights movement and a crucial part of Dr. Martin Luther King’s life, church, and ministry.

It is also home to the bus stop where Rosa Parks waited for the bus on that fateful day.

And now for us, Dexter Ave has also become home. It houses the location of the church where the Lord has led our family to serve and be a part of.

In this photo taken earlier last year, here we stand on Dexter Ave in symbolic footprints, facing the location of the once slave market with the capitol behind us and standing at marks that were once limitations, but by the power of God working through humanity these places no longer carry the hindrances they once did.

The history that occurred here is undeniable and was a definite crucible of change. We are thankful for the work of Dr. King and countless others who stood for justice. None of us are perfect but we can learn how to do better moving forward. And that is what we’re striving to do. Standing in marks of history and with the opportunity to be a part of natural history and most importantly ministry history for the Kingdom of God– serving at a multigenerational, multicultural, and multi-socioeconomic church focused on changing lives one person at a time right on Dexter Ave.

We are thankful for the Lord’s providential hand in allowing us to be where we are today and our family being able to reflect history in this way and being a small part of history in the making.

Happy MLK Day! 👑❤️💛🖤🤍
