Spring into Reading with ColorFULL Bubbles!
Who doesn’t like bubbles?! They make for the perfect springtime activity. My boys and I look forward to filling our bubble blower machine and spinning in the whirlwinds of bubbles. They bring so much joy and make any space feel magical. One thing I always notice is that no bubble is ever the same. Each one varies in shape, size, and color. Even with their variability, they are ALL beautiful to marvel at and enjoy.
In her children’s book entitled “ColorFull: Celebrating the Colors God Gave Us”, author Dorena Williamson makes these same observations as she illuminates the beauty of bubbles in relation to the beautiful diversity in which God created each of us.
This joyful story takes an inclusive approach to discussing race: “instead of being colorblind, we can choose to celebrate each color God gave us and be colorFULL instead.”
This is a classic must-have story to add to your family’s spring reading collection. You and your family will greatly enjoy it. The book also includes a “Parent Connection” page that shares a family devotional along with discussion questions about the idea of being colorFULL instead of being “colorblind”.
After reading this book with your family, here some activities you can enjoy surrounding the story:
Compare & Contrast - In the story, Imani and Kayla are best friends but they are alike and different in many ways. Create a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting their characteristics.
Word Study - Spend time learning about the suffix “-ful”, which means “full of”. Make a list of words that the suffix “-ful” can be added to. Talk about the meaning of each word on your list. Have your child write a sentence for each word or a story using as many words as possible from your list.
Craft Time - Make colorFULL artwork by bubble painting with bubble wands.
You will need:
Bubble solution
Food coloring
Bubble wands
Cups and/or trays to dip your wands into
Large sheets of painting paper
Pour some bubble mixture into each tray or cup – one for each color. Then add a little food coloring to each tray and stir gently. You don’t want to make too many bubbles in your cup because the bubbles don’t work so well when the mixture is all bubbly. Now, it’s time to blow colorFULL bubbles all over your paper!
This activity can get artfully messy, so make sure it’s done in the proper attire and in a space where you don’t mind a few art splats.
Sweet Treats - I scream! You scream! We all scream for ICE CREAM! Set up an ice cream sundae bar for your family filled with colorful ice cream and toppings.
